Do I need to pay taxes on what I earn as a subcontractor?

In 99 out of 100 cases, YES! How much, which ones and to whom we cannot say as this depends completely on factors like your residency, location, whether you have a fixed income, the amount of times you work as a self-employed, where you work, and the amount of money you earn with this.

When you work as a subcontractor for Flexbox we do not pay any of these taxes for you. This is completely your own responsibility. We advice you to contact your local tax authorities or a local tax advisor to discuss you situation.

You are most likely to pay an x% to social contributions (unemployment insurance, health insurance, retirement packages) depending on where you work and a x% on income taxes, depending on where you live and how much your total income is.

Especially for freelancers working in multiple counties, or on ships whose owners are located in different countries, determining where to pay social contributions can become quite complex. We advise you to keep a good record of how many days you worked on which ships and under which flags these sail and contact your local social security authority to assist you.

Do I need to register myself as a company and/or register for VAT?

We tread you as a self-employed. Whether you need to register yourself for VAT or as an official company depends completely on your residency, location, the amount of times you work as a self-employed and the amount of money you earn with this.

In some countries it’s fine to earn some money as a freelancer next to a fix job or up until X thousand euros, in others you need to register straight away. We advice you to contact your local tax authorities or a local tax advisor to discuss you situation.

Flexbox will never be responsible for any direct or indirect taxes, including any social contributions, VAT, or income tax, which may apply to your situation.

We will happily assist you where we can with setting up your company registration, getting you a VAT number and issuing your first invoice. Simply reach out to us by sending an email to  info@flexboxcrewing.com

What is the benefit of becoming an official freelancer with VAT number and company registration?

It might sound like a lot of hassle to register your activities as a freelance sailor or captain as an official company but it also comes with a lot of benefits. In most countries you will quickly run into troubles with the local tax authorities if you don’t set up an official company for your freelance activities, but again this is completely dependent on your location, residency and the amount of money you make with your freelance endeavors.

  •  Your company registration will make it easier for clients to hire you, creates a sense of trust and security which might result in better rates for your services.
  •  You will need to keep a clear administration of your work, which means you won’t be surprised by the Tax man at the end of the year.
  •  Expenses you make to be able to perform your job are deductible from your taxable income. Think about travel costs, telephone costs, work and safety clothes.
  •  You will be your own boss.
